Real rice VS plastic rice – Detection and Identification

A lot has been going said, talked and written about plastic rice. After the onset and outburst of the problem in China, the terror is now reaching every nook and corner of the world; India being no exception.

Consuming plastic rice has its own side-effects on the body leading to gastro-intestinal problems, serious ulcers and even cancer. The identification of plastic rice from normal rice is not rocket science and can be done easily by anybody at home with simple ingredients.

Just in case, you too suspect your rice being plastic, perform the following easy tests and give your doubts some rest.

1. The Water Test:
Take a glass of water, drop a tablespoon of raw rice inside and stir it for some time. If the rice floats at the top then it is plastic rice, because rice doesn’t float on the water. If it settles at the bottom, the rice is completely safe to consume.

2. The Fire Test:
Take a hand full of rice and burn it using a lighter. If you smell something peculiar or something similar to the smell of plastic burning, the rice is plastic. Real rice will turn black on burning but will not give any smell.

3. Hot Oil Test:
Take some rice and drop them into very hot oil. If the rice is plastic, it will melt and stick together at the bottom of the vessel, while the real rice will float above. In addition to this, the plastic rice will also form a layer on top of oil from the plastic that has melted.

4. The Fungus Test:
After boiling the rice, put some of it in a bottle and leave it for 3 days. If you observe any bacterial growth or mold, the rice is safe. If mold does not appear, then your rice is fake, Plastic rice will not grow mold in any weather conditions.

5. Boiling Test:
While boiling the rice, if it is plastic rice it will start forming a thick layer at the top of the vessel.
